Please plan to attend the 6th Annual Conference of the
International Society for the Prevention of Tobacco Induced Diseases (ISPTID)
November 2 – 4, 2007, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA
Conference Theme: TRANSLATIONAL APPROACHES TO THE PREVENTION OF TOBACCO
INDUCED DISEASES
It is with pleasure and with high expectations that the Organizing
Committee for the 6th Annual Conference of the International Society for the
Prevention of Tobacco Induced Diseases invites you to join us in Little
Rock, Arkansas, USA November 2-4, 2007. We are excited about hosting the
2007 Conference in our beautiful city and state.
Target Audience: Physicians, scientists, public health officials,
nurses, policy makers, and all health professionals who are interested in
tobacco induced diseases and their prevention.
The conference theme is "Translational Approaches to the Prevention
of Tobacco Induced Diseases." The importance of this conference and
our work together cannot be overstated. Worldwide, every ten seconds another
person dies as a result of tobacco use. In Hong Kong 5,750 people die
annually from active smoking and another 1,300 die from passive smoking. In
China, it is estimated that 100 million of that country’s 300 million
males, now ages 0-30, will eventually die from tobacco-induced disease.
While great strides have been made in the USA to make many states smoke
free, tobacco induced diseases and deaths still continue at an alarming
rate.
This year's ISPTID annual conference will highlight many of the areas
usefully addressed at the Society's previous meetings, including mechanisms
of addiction, legal and economical issues of tobacco-induced diseases,
sociological and psychological issues of tobacco addiction, prevention and
cessation of tobacco use, as well as cause and effect relationships for
specific medical disorders. The panel of outstanding plenary speakers is
guaranteed to raise new issues for you within the broad realm of tobacco-
related health issues. (see Program within this website). We urge you to
submit your work for oral or poster presentation (see Submissions within
this website) Arkansas is the only state within the 50 US states that has
used 100% of its tobacco settlement funds for health-related purposes. Two
workshops have been added to this year's conference to share this health
policy success story. One workshop will focus on the utilization of tobacco
control funding for research and public education. The second workshop will
highlight Arkansas programs for the treatment of people with tobacco
dependence.
This conference is being organized by the University Arkansas for Medical
Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine's Department of Physiology and
Biophysics in cooperation with UAMS College of Public Health, UAMS Arkansas
Cancer Research Center, the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS) Division of Health, the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission, and
the leaders of the ISPTID.
